It has been a far from ideal pre-season for the Mayo senior hurling team with manager Christy Philips resigning just before Christmas. But last weekend they got 2015 off to a winning start in the new Connacht Senior Hurling League when they saw off the challenge of Leitrim by 2-13 to 0-5 in Ballinamore. The Mayo management team of JP Coen, Derek Walsh, Tommy Feeney, and John Waldron fielded an experimental side but will have been pleased with what they saw from their side in their first outing, with only a very small bit of training behind them so far.

Castlebar Mitchels hurling club’s Hurling on the Green starts on Monday July 1 and will run for six weeks. The main sponsor is Deely Opticians and the club would like to thank Mark and Denise for their continued support of this fine project. Hurling on the Green is a fun hurling coaching camp for youth members of Castlebar Mitchels Hurling Club. New members are most welcome to join the club. Hurling equipment will be available for sale at subsidised rates for members. The coaching programme is designed to suit all age groups from six to 12. Hurling on the Green will commence on Monday July 1 and run for six weeks on The Mall, Castlebar, every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and Friday from 10am to 1pm. This year’s main coaches are Barry Lane and Alan Gavin and Cathal Walsh.

The Connacht Council has handed the down a €10,000 fine to Mayo GAA for their failure to take part in the away final of Connacht FBD League. The final was due to take place on Sunday October 7 against New York in the US city, two weeks after Mayo had played in the All Ireland final against Donegal in Croke Park.

The National u14 Feile na nGael championships this year will see two hurling sides from Mayo taking part in Dublin from July 5 to 7. Tooreen will represent Mayo in division four, as they are hosted by the Naomh Mearnog Club in Portmarnock. The side are also grouped with Tomas Davis in Tallaght and Dungannon (Tyrone). The Tooreen side go to the festival in high hopes of progressing out of their group, with one eye also on the division four final in Croke Park. Tooreen’s last national title was in 2004, as they overcame Middletown of Armagh in the division three final in Navan to claim the Michael Cusack Trophy. Many of that Feile na nGael winning side are now members of the Tooreen and Mayo Senior Hurling teams.

Connacht Rugby this week announced the release of the last batch of tickets for Connacht's first home Heineken Cup game against Toulouse on November 19. The final return of tickets has been received from Toulouse and numbers are strictly limited. These tickets, which are for the Bohermore and College Road terraces cost €30 each and will be sold on a first come first served basis so supporters are urged to purchase their tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Connacht ladies have been crowned the u-18 Gaynor Cup 2011 champions.

The Connacht badminton team secured silver at this year’s Interprovincial Championships in Baldoyle Badminton Centre on Sunday.

The TF Royal Theatre and Events Centre, Castlebar, will play host to the Connacht GAA Scór na nÓg finals.
